India has intensified its monitoring of China's $147 billion Yarlung Tsangpo project following shocking revelations from Beijing's own scientists. State geologists warn that the world's largest dam is being built directly over an active Ice Age fault line, creating severe structural cracking risks that directly threaten downstream Indian states.


The stakes around the completion of China’s Brahmaputra dam project have become an absolute emergency level concern for India. The large scale hydropower dam project which is currently under construction on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet has directly hit an active Himalayan tectonic fracture as per a recent report from government geologists in Beijing. 

Reports claim that the facility which was going to be the world’s largest dam once completed is sitting right on top of the Paizhen Fault. 

This Himalayan tectonic fault has been moving continuously since the last Ice Age and scientists were constantly warning us against the crack in the bedrock and its direct effect on the mega dam. 

Now Indian government too has placed China’s Brahmaputra dam project under round the clock surveillance due to the flooding risk it poses to millions of lives in Northeast India. 

Why India is Closely Monitoring China’s Brahmaputra Dam Project

The Ministry of External Affairs and Indian defence agencies are tracking the development of the tectonic fracture with immense caution. 

The hydropower project is in Medog County. This is where the river makes a sharp U-turn into Arunachal Pradesh as the Siang to become the Brahmaputra in Assam later. 

  1. If the already fractured tectonic fault as a foundation suffers even more structural cracking of the dam or a seismic breach then an unmanageable amount of water would flood both Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in one go. 

  2. The structural vulnerability of the dam gives China a convenient excuse to abruptly change or entirely stop the river flows under the pretence of emergency repairs. It means that the Indian water security during dry seasons would be under threat. 

  3. It does not mean that China would remain unaffected by the Paizhen Fault crackdown. The state reports that long term water flow will trigger large slope collapses on both sides of the reservoirs. And the landslide for India means sudden unpredictable blockages that can burst without warning.

A state run China Geological Survey admits that the regional rock has a loose structure and weak cohesion. This severely impacts the load bearing safety of what is meant to be the largest hydro engineering project on Earth, the report further adds.

"The Paizhen Fault, which has been highly active since the Pleistocene epoch, will have a major impact on the structural stability and construction of nearby structures, including dams, roads, bridges, and tunnels," the Chinese research team explicitly stated.

This sudden warning from China's own scientific community confirms that the threat is entirely real. The mega $147 billion dam project of China on an unstable Ice Age fault line means India is no longer just facing a resource dispute with its neighbour. It is dealing with an unpredictable environmental hazard that makes water diplomacy a matter of national survival.
