CBSE Twice a Year Board Exam: Two-New Phase Exam System Explained: Check Benefits for Students and Parents

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant change to its Class 10 board examinations, aiming to enhance student well-being and academic performance. Starting from the 2026 academic session, these exams will be conducted twice a year.
According to Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, this new system represents a major departure from the traditional structure, providing students with greater flexibility and more chances to showcase their knowledge. The first examination phase will take place in February, with a second, optional phase in May. While all Class 10 students must appear for the February exams, the May session offers an opportunity to improve scores or retake subjects. This student-focused approach is further supported by a simplification of internal assessments, which will now be conducted only once per academic year.

CBSE to Conduct Class 10 Board Exams Twice A Year from 2026

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled a transformative reform for its Class 10 board examinations, announcing that students will now have the option to appear for their exams twice a year, starting from the 2026 academic session. This significant decision, communicated by CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, is set to usher in a new era of greater flexibility and reduced pressure for millions of students nationwide.

Understanding the New Two-Phase Examination System

Under the newly approved norms, the Class 10 board examinations will be split into two distinct phases:

  • First Phase (February): This initial examination window will be held in February each year.
  • Second Phase (May): A subsequent examination window will be made available in May of the same academic year.

This structured approach is designed to provide students with more opportunities to perform at their best, addressing concerns often associated with a single high-stakes examination.

Mandatory First Phase, Optional Second Chance

A key aspect of this revised examination pattern is the participation mandate. It has been clearly stated by CBSE that all Class 10 students will be compulsorily required to appear in the first phase of the board exams in February. This ensures that every student undergoes at least one board assessment.

However, the second phase in May is entirely optional. Students will have the flexibility to choose whether or not to appear for the May examinations. This option can be particularly beneficial for those who:

  • Wish to improve their score in specific subjects after assessing their performance in the first phase.
  • Could not perform optimally in the February exams due to unforeseen circumstances (like illness or personal issues).
  • Simply seek another opportunity to enhance their overall academic standing.

Streamlined Internal Assessments

In conjunction with the new twice-a-year board exam schedule, CBSE has also simplified the process for internal assessments. According to the new norms, internal assessments will now be conducted only once during the academic year. This change aims to reduce the burden on schools and students regarding continuous assessment processes, allowing more focus on preparing for the board examinations while maintaining academic rigor.

Benefits for Students: Enhanced Flexibility and Reduced Pressure

This groundbreaking reform by CBSE is anticipated to bring a multitude of benefits for Class 10 students:

  • Reduced Exam Pressure: The traditional single-exam format often leads to immense stress. Multiple attempts can alleviate this pressure, allowing students to approach exams with a calmer mindset.
  • Improved Performance: Students who may not have performed to their potential in the first attempt due to various reasons will get a valuable second chance to secure better scores.
  • Focus on Learning over Rote: With two opportunities, the emphasis might shift from last-minute cramming to more continuous and genuine learning throughout the year.
  • Flexibility: The optional second phase provides a safety net and a personalized approach to examination

Looking Ahead: Implementation from 2026

The new examination system for Class 10 board exams is set to be implemented from the 2026 academic session. This lead time provides schools, teachers, students, and parents ample opportunity to understand the new structure, adapt their teaching and learning strategies, and prepare effectively for this significant change in the Indian education landscape. This move by CBSE aligns with the broader goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for greater flexibility and a more holistic assessment system.
