Apple’s New AI Strategy Focuses on App Store Integration and Search Experience

What is Apple’s New plan to maintain its position in the race for Artificial Intelligence against ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic, and other platforms? Here are the details on Apple’s strategy to tackle other rapidly moving platforms in the AI race.

Apple has decided to focus on its core strengths, on selling highly profitable hardware, and raising revenues from the services running on it. 

Sensing a significant lag in the AI market against top competitors like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic, and other platforms, the company has also opted to integrate sufficient AI into its operating systems so that users don’t have to move to Android. 

Siri and Apple Intelligence are opening up to third-party services, as the company will unveil its new approach at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8.

Generally, Apple’s chips and hardware perform competently while its AI has been worse than expected. This brings the conclusion that the company’s future is probably embedded in hardware, not AI software and advanced large language models. 

This dynamic strongly reiterates the candidacy of John Ternus, Apple’s head of hardware engineering, as a natural successor to Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook.

After being taken by surprise by ChatGPT in 2022, and losing its AI talent to OpenAI, Meta Platforms Inc., Google and Anthropic PBC, Apple had no other choice than accepting its incompetence in the race. 

The company continues to compete across domains of  music, messaging, TV and maps, but decided not develop a serious competitor internally in AI.

Apple’s Focus on App Store Integration

The forthcoming iOS 27 Extensions feature which lets users install third-party AI chatbots beyond ChatGPT and run them inside Siri,is going to have its own dedicated App Store section, effectively creating an AI App Store. 

It is going to be an important foundation of the strategy and serve as a merchandising place of sorts for third-party AI incorporations.

Focus on improving Search Experience

Some Apple executives and commentators have tried drawing parallels between AI & web search proclaiming that the company could succeed in AI without owning it. 

But the comparison is not accurate as search being a destination while AI becoming the next-generation OS itself.
