Maharashtra Forms AI Governance Committee for Higher Education
The Maharashtra government has constituted a 10-member AI, Data Analytics and Dashboard Governance Committee to promote the use of artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and automated decision-support systems in higher and technical education. The panel will also focus on data security, privacy and ethical AI use.

The Higher and Technical Education Department constituted the AI, Data Analytics & Dashboard Governance Committee through a Government Resolution issued on September 21. The initiative is aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the state's IT and cybersecurity guidelines.
Prof Rajnish Kamat to Head Panel
Prof Rajnish Kamat, Vice-Chancellor of Shivaji University, Kolhapur, will head the committee. The panel includes senior officials and technical experts from the Higher and Technical Education Department, Directorate of Higher Education, Directorate of Technical Education and other state education bodies.
The committee will initially function for three years and will meet at least once every three months. It will submit quarterly progress reports to senior officials of the Higher and Technical Education Department.

AI to Support Education Governance
The committee will work on developing long-term AI strategies and identifying areas where technology can improve administration and decision-making.
The state's existing Dashboard Portal contains information related to student enrolment, examinations, university affiliations, scholarships, public libraries and research journals. The government plans to transform this data into an evidence-based decision-support system.
The committee will explore technologies including Generative AI, Agentic AI, Machine Learning, Optical Character Recognition, Computer Vision, Anomaly Detection and Natural Language Processing.
Focus on Data Security and Ethical AI
Another key responsibility of the committee will be to ensure that AI-based systems follow cybersecurity and data privacy requirements. It will also work on guidelines for transparent and ethical use of AI, including human oversight.
The panel will examine ways to standardise data across platforms such as MahaDBT, AISHE, e-Office, MIS, the NOC Portal and Sevarth. It may also create specialised working groups for areas such as cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure and analytics.
Quarterly Review of AI Projects
The committee may invite external experts and representatives from technology institutions when required. It will also recommend training programmes on AI, Generative AI and digital transformation for government officials and education-sector staff.
While the committee will make recommendations on technology, data and AI-based systems, final decisions on policy implementation, financial approvals, system integration and data sharing will remain with the Maharashtra government.
