The State Legislative Assembly, also known as the Vidhan Sabha, is a legislative body in twenty-eight states and three union territories (Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu & Kashmir)Members of the legislative assembly are directly elected for five-year terms from single-member constituencies. In states with a bicameral legislature, the Vidhan Sabha acts as the lower house, whereas in unicameral states or UTs, the Vidhan Sabha is the sole legislative body.

Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly Elections 2026 were held in a single phase in Tamil Nadu on 23 April 2026. No repoll has been recommended in any of the 75,064 polling stations across Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu registered a record turnout of 85.1 per cent voter turnout in the Assembly Elections 2026. 

Puducherry State Legislative Assembly Elections 2026 were held in a single phase in Puducherry on 9 April 2026. Puducherry registered an unprecedented voter turnout of 89.87 per cent in the 2026 Assembly elections held on 9 April 2026, marking the highest participation since the Union Territoy's first assembly elections in 1964. 

The final counting of votes for all 234 seats for the 2026 Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections and all 30 seats for the 2026 Puducherry State Assembly elections are scheduled on 4 May 2026.

Number of seats

Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly Elections 2026 were held in a single phase in Tamil Nadu on 23 April 2026 to elect all 234 members of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. A majority of 118 seats are required to win the elections. The tenure of the 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly ends on 10 May 2026.

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) secured 159 out of 234 seats, with M.K. Stalin sworn in as the Chief Minister. Whereas, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) secured 66 seats, establishing itself as the opposition party. Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the former Chief Minister, was elected as the Leader of the Opposition.

Puducherry State Legislative Assembly Elections 2026 were held in a single phase in Puducherry on 9 April 2026 to elect all 30 members of the 16th Puducherry Legislative Assembly. A majority of 17 seats are required to win the elections. The tenure of the 15th Puducherry Legislative Assembly ends on 15 June 2026.

In the 2021 Puducherry Legislative Assembly elections, the All India N.R. Congress-led National Democratic Alliance won 16 out 30 seats, with N. Rangaswamy sworn in as the Chief Minister. Whereas, the Indian National Congress secured just 2 seats out of the 15 it contested while its ally DMK secured 6 seats. The 2021 result marked the first time the BJP became a ruling partner in the Union Territory.
