Superior Kerosene Oil (SKO)is a refined hydrocarbon mixture with a boiling range typically between 150°C and 300°C. It represents a premium tier of fuel group unlike crude or low grade kerosene. It has a high smoke point, low sulfur content, and clean-burning properties.

SKO undergoes extensive hydrofining to reduce aromatic compounds and impurities. It produces minimal soot and odor which makes it safe for indoor use and sensitive industrial tasks.

What is Superior Kerosene Oil?

SKO undergoes extensive hydrofining to reduce aromatic compounds and impurities. It produces minimal soot and odor which makes it safe for indoor use and sensitive industrial tasks.

Technically, SKO is a middle distillate extracted from crude oil during fractional distillation to be classified as "Superior," the oil must meet stringent quality benchmarks.

Superior Kerosene Oil is regulated by the Bureau of Indian Standards (IS 1459). SKO is primarily used for domestic cooking and lighting, but it also functions as a vital industrial solvent and cleaner.

Superior Kerosene Oil Specification:

According to official standards (such as IS 1459:2018), SKO must possess specific physical and chemical traits:

Property

Requirement (Standard)

Flash Point (Abel)

Minimum 35°C

Smoke Point

Minimum 18 mm (22 mm for Defense/Railways)

Total Sulphur

Maximum 0.10% to 0.20%

Density 15°C

Approximately 0.78 to 0.82 g/ml

Distillation (Final Boiling Point)

Maximum 300°C

What is the Blue Distinction of Superior Kerosene Oil?

In India, SKO distributed through the Public Distribution System (PDS) is dyed blue. This is a regulatory measure to distinguish subsidized fuel from White Kerosene sold in the open market, helping to prevent illegal diversion and adulteration of automotive fuels like diesel.

Superior Kerosene Oil Uses

SKO is an incredibly versatile product. Its stability and high energy density (11,100 kcal/kg) make it ideal for several sectors:

use of kerosene oil

1. Domestic & Household Use:

  • Cooking: It is the primary fuel for wick stoves and pressure stoves.

  • Lighting: Used in lanterns and wick-fed lamps.

  • Heating: In colder climates, SKO is used in space heaters because it is safer and more stable than gasoline.

2. Industrial Applications

  • Solvents & Thinners: SKO acts as a base for many paints, lacquers, and varnishes.

  • Degreasing: Its ability to dissolve grease and oil makes it a go-to cleaning agent for machinery components and engine parts.

  • Pesticide Carrier: It is often used as a solvent in the manufacture of insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides.

3. Specialized Sector Uses

  • Railways & Defense: Used in signal lamps and specialized heating equipment where a high smoke point is required to prevent soot buildup on glass.

  • Chemical Feedstock: It serves as a raw material for producing Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB), a key ingredient in biodegradable detergents.

Safety Note: Always handle SKO in well-ventilated areas. Due to its flash point, it is classified as a Class B flammable liquid. Store in approved containers away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
