According to the constitution of India, it is an officially recognized language of India that falls in the category of a classical language due to its extensive literature and a long history of more than 2000 years. In Karnataka, efforts have been made by the government to promote Kannada within the offices and educational institutions of the state.

Other languages that are spoken in the state of Karnataka include Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, and Hindi; however, Kannada stands out amongst all of them.

The existence of the Kannada language is proven by the Halmidi inscription, which dates back to the fifth century.

There are three major periods in which Kannada developed. 

They include the Old Kannada period (450-1200 AD), the Middle Kannada period (1200-1700 AD), and the Modern Kannada period (after 1700 AD). Some famous poets who have made contributions to make the Kannada language rich are Pampa, Ranna, and Ponna from all three periods.

Other Languages Spoken in Karnataka

Karnataka is a culturally diverse state where various languages are spoken along with Kannada because of its geographical position. As a result of interactions with other cultures, some regional and minority languages are extensively spoken in Karnataka.

The Tamil language is spoken by many people who live in areas that share a border with Tamil Nadu, while the Telugu language is spoken by those who live near Andhra Pradesh. Some districts of northern Karnataka bordering Maharashtra speak Marathi.

The Urdu language is spoken by a sizable portion of the population residing mostly in urban areas. Hindi and English are also widely spoken.

Some languages spoken by minor groups include Tulu, Kodava, and Konkani. Despite Kannada being the main language, there are multiple languages spoken in Karnataka.
