Miyazaki mango is the world's most expensive mango. It is a premium quality mango grown in Japan's Miyazaki Prefecture. These mangoes fetch as much as $3,000 or about ₹2.5 lakh at auctions for a single pair. These mangoes are renowned for their ruby red colour and extreme sweetness.

In Japan, the best quality Miyazaki mangoes are marketed under the name Taiyo no Tamago. In English, this name means "Egg of the Sun. These mangoes have a special quality due to their ruby-red color and sugar content.

They are cultivated under 'controlled' greenhouse conditions. The minimum weight of each fruit should be 350 grams, and the sugar content should be 15% to receive the certification. It has become a symbol of luxury and is often given as an expensive gift in Japan.

Why is the Miyazaki Mango so special?

While majority of mangoes ripen to a yellow or green color but the Miyazaki mango instead has a beautiful ruby red colour. This colour is a result of a particular cultivation technique. Small nets are wrapped around each fruit by the farmers, when the fruit is still on the tree.

The nets enable the mango to be exposed to the sun from all directions. This will help to ensure that the skin turns an even red. The farmers also lay mirrors on the ground. They are mirrors that will reflect sunlight onto the bottom of the fruit. This is known as solar radiation. The natural heat and light of the sun helps the fruit to ripen to perfection.

These mangoes are never hand-picked. The fruit drops into the protective nets. This makes sure that the mango is fresh and at its peak ripeness. Creamy and extremely sweet, the flesh of Miyazaki mangoes contains virtually no fibre.

Why is the price of Miyazaki mango so high?

The high price is due to the intensive labour and quality control. Only a small percentage of mangoes are certified "Egg of the Sun". If there is any mark on the skin or if the sugar content is low, then the price of the mango falls. The special greenhouses operated to achieve the best quality fruit also adds to the price..

Miyazaki mangoes are tends considered a luxury in Japan. These mangoes are auctioned separately. They are bid upon by rich buyers and business owners to display their status.
