So, to determine the number of weeks that there are in a year, take the total number of days in the year and divide by the number of days in a week:

365 / 7 = 52 + 1 days.

Regular years, therefore, consist of 52 full weeks plus 1 day.

Due to this, even though people usually say that on average, there are 52 weeks in a year, this number will be inaccurate, as there is always 1 day more than can make a week.

How Leap Years Affect the Number of Weeks

A leap year occurs once every four years to keep the calendar aligned with the Earth’s rotation around the sun. 

In a leap year, February has 29 days instead of 28, making the total number of days 366.

And, when we divide 366 days by 7, we get 52 weeks and 2 extra days

So, a leap year has 52 weeks and 2 additional days. These extra days are why calendar dates shift each year slightly.

Can a Year Have 53 Weeks?

Most years are recognized as having 52 weeks in day-to-day use. However, using certain calendaring systems, typically payrolls or business calendars, will occasionally consider that the year has 53 weeks. 

The reason for this is that the calendars have accumulated an extra full week over time due to the excess days of the year.
