Hindi Diwas 2026: Why Is It Celebrated?
Hindi Diwas is celebrated on 14th September every year and the day is associated with the historic decision of the Constituent Assembly on 14th September 1949 for adoption of Hindi in the Devanagari script as the official language of the Union as per article 343 of the Constitution.
The Government of India has been celebrating Hindi Diwas and Hindi Fortnight through various programmes which have been started to promote the Hindi language in government work.

1. Bharatendu Harishchandra (1850–1885)
Bharatendu Harishchandra is not just the first name that comes to mind when speaking of the development of modern Hindi literature, but the only name that springs to mind.
Was a poet, writer, playwright and journalist. He was a writer of issues related to people's life in society such as poverty, exploitation and social inequality.
Bharatendu was also instrumental in making Hindi writing more related to the life of common people. His contribution to modern Hindi literature is significant and so he is remembered as the “Father of Modern Hindi Literature.”

2. Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi (1864–1938)
Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi was an important writer, editor, translator and critic. He made a significant contribution to the development of modern Hindi writing.
This era is referred to as Dwivedi Yug in connection with his works. He motivated writers to write and edit in a clear and useful manner in the Hindi language.

3. Munshi Premchand (1880–1936)
Premchand Munshi is surely one of the most popular names in Hindi literature.
His stories were unique in that they discussed real life. He wrote about farmers, poor families, women and workers who were very weak in society.
Premchand did not depict a perfect world, it showed the problems faced by the ordinary Indians.

4. Jaishankar Prasad (1889–1937)

5. Suryakant Tripathi ‘Nirala’ (1896–1961)
Suryakant Tripathi ‘Nirala' was a poet, writer, essayist and story writer. He was one of the four great writers of the period of Chhayavad.

6. Sumitranandan Pant (1900–1977)
