Extension of Winter Vacations Across States Due to Cold Wave
Many states across the northern and eastern belt have imposed strict cold wave guidelines and extension of winter holidays. Delhi government today announced winter holiday extension till January 15, 2026. Other states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Jharkhand have also extended winter holidays or have changed school timings in view of the extreme weather conditions.
Delhi School Update: School Closed Till 15 January
All schools, government aided, public and private will be closed in Delhi till January 15, 2026. The extended winter break is a part of the official academic calendar. The announcement is officially released by the Directorate of Education (DoE), and the government of NCT of Delhi.
- This order will be applied to all government aided, private and public schools.
Uttar Pradesh School Holiday Update: District-Wise Closures Continue
As per the latest U.P. government's order all schools till class 12 will be closed in the state due to severe cold waves and dip in temperature. If not complied the orders schools have to face strict repercussions as directed by the governement administration. The directive is applied to all CBSE/ICSE/ State board schools.
- Major cities like Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur and Kanpur dehat have previously announced school closure for up to classes 8.
- The holidays were scheduled from January 7 to January 9.
Schools Closed in Punjab Due to Cold Waves
The Punjab government has also announced today that all schools will be closed till Janaury 13, 2026.
- The schools were closed due to cold waves till January 7, and were scheduled to reopen from today but due to weather conditions, the state government has announced school holiday extension because of extreme cold and dense fog disrupting the landscape.
- These holidays may extend to January 14, in view of Makar Sankranti festival, and after that schools may likely to open after the festival. As these dates are announced by Punjab government's official notifications, students and parents are suggested to stay alert for official orders and notificiations from your institutions.
Jharkhand School Holiday: Cold Wave Forces Continued Closures
Schools in Jharkhand will be closed till January 10, 2026 as ordered by Manjunath Bhajantri, Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi. The state’s School Education and Literacy Department has previously announced the school closure till January 8, 2026.
- The order has been implemented considering the continuous plunge in temperature and extreme cold wave disrupting day to day life. As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warnings, the weather continues to be intense and people have to experience dense fog in coming days. This would make children vulnerable to cold wave related health issues.
Tripura School Holiday: Winter Chill Continues to Cause Issue
- The Tripura Government has also closed schools for the coming five days (starting from January 6, 2026) due to intense cold in the state.
- The Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha had been considering announcing a brief winter vacation for students across the state.
Telangana School Holidays: Closed Till January 16, 2026
As per the Telangana government’s official notification on January 5, 2026 (Monday) all schools including government, private and public shall implement closure from January 6, 2026 to January 10, 2026. The announcement came due to extreme winter weather effects in the state.
The school is likely to reopen from January 12, 2026. Although, students and parents are advised to confirm the school reopening dates as there will be ongoing festivals on January 13, and 14.
