School Holiday on 15 January 2026 (Thursday): As for tomorrow January 15, Thursday, many schools will be closed due to Makar Sankaranti and winter holiday extension in some parts of northern states. In Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat and other states, schools will be closed on the occasion of Makar Sankranti/Bihu celebrations. While in Uttarakhand students will celebrate Ghughuti,(a regional harvest festival) on the day marking school holiday for tomorrow. 

In Delhi, no gazetted holiday is allowed for Makar Sankranti and therefore, schools will not have a holiday on Thursday. Delhi and Delhi–NCR: Schools Closed Due to Winter Break

In Delhi and Delhi NCR, the extreme weather is affecting day to day activities. The continuous rise in pollution also posing serious health concerns for citizens of all ages. Due to this, schools in Delhi will remain shut tomorrow, as per the order of Directorate of Education, Government of Delhi. The winter vacation dates have been extended for schools in Delhi from January 1 to January 15, 2026.

  • Delhi-NCR regions like Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad have also extended school holidays till 14 January, 2026. While the region also sees Makar Sankranti as a major holiday, the schools will likely be closed tomorrow to celebrate the Sankranti festival.

Uttar Pradesh: Winter Vacation Continues

Uttar Pradesh observes January 15, 2026 as an official holiday on account of Makar Sankranti. Many schools in the state, be it government or private schools will be closed due to weather alerts and rise in cold across the northern region. The dense fog along with extreme cold wave conditions are making it complicated for schools to function, therefore as per the state authorities, schools in the state will be closed till tomorrow. For reopening students and parents are advised to stay alert for further announcements. 

Haryana School Holiday: Festivals and Winter Holiday

Schools in Haryana are usually closed due to winter vacation announcement till January 15, and are likely to open from January 16. The state also celebrates Makar Sankranti dating from January 14-15. So, the school holiday will be in effect and students get to enjoy the festival feast and celebrate the day.

Chandigarh: School Holiday Extension

In Chandigarh the authorities have announced winter vacation holiday extension till January 17 due to fluctuating temperatures. As per the media reports, the Union Territory will observe long winter holidays till January 17, and On January 18 it will be a Sunday, therefore, schools are scheduled to reopen on January 19. 

Tamil Nadu: Pongal Festival Holidays Begin

As per the latest news, schools in Tamil Nadu will be closed till January 17, on the occasion of Pongal. The days are dedicated for farmers, to celebrate and show gratitude for the new harvest and their profound contribution/

The Pongal is celebrated for four days beginning from January 14, till January 17. The days are known as Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal, Mattu Pongal, and Kaanum Pongal each signifying the days to show gratitude by cleaning and offering food items.

Assam School Holiday: Magh Bihu

As per Drik Panchang, Magh Bihu will be celebrated on January 15 (Thursday) while the Sankranti is supposed to be celebrated from mid day on January 14. All the educational institutes and government institutes will be closed across Guahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Tezpur. The day will allow students to celebrate the festival and participate in community feasts and cultural activities.
