G7 Summit 2025: The 51st G7 Summit 2025, hosted by Kananaskis, Canada, brought together the leaders of the world's most advanced economies to discuss pressing global issues ranging from climate change and economic stability to geopolitical tensions and technological governance. It is an intergovernmental forum to discuss the global policies and now the most relevant topic of today’s times, Artificial Intelligence. G7 is a group of seven countries. When the G7 was formed, it was a group of six countries including the United States, France, Italy, Japan, the UK, and West Germany. In 1981, the EU was added as a new member. Then in 1998, Russia was added as a new member to the group and hence it was called the G8 group. But due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2014, it has been removed from the grouping making the group as G7.

The idea was to create an informal forum for the world’s most industrialized and democratic economies to coordinate economic policy and promote stability.

Evolution of G7:

  • 1975: The first summit was held in Rambouillet, France, involving six countries—France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US—forming the G6.

  • 1976: Canada joined, creating the G7.

  • 1998: Russia was included, forming the G8, but was later suspended in 2014 following the annexation of Crimea.

  • 1981: The European Union participates as a non-enumerated member, and the group is once again referred to as the G7.

G7 Summit 2025: Key Outcomes

  • Frontline Gear Support Program

  • Capacity Building and Knowledge Exchange and Global Indigenous Fire Network

  • Integrated Fire Management and Restoration of Forests and Post-Fire Ecosystems in Colombia and Peru

  • Post-Fire Forest and Landscape Restoration (FLARE)

3. Global South and Development Finance

  • Launch of Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) 2.0 to counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

  • Focus on debt sustainability and transparency in development finance.

4. Geopolitical Issues

  • Unified stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, including extended sanctions on Russia.
