Amid a heightened rise in student visa refusals, Universities across the United Kingdom are withdrawing admissions to international students, including from India, Pakistan and Nigeria. The new measure features soaring concerns among higher education institutions that tougher immigration rules could curb their ability to recruit students worldwide.

According to a Financial Times report, universities are increasingly cancelling offers to applicants before visas are finalised. Institutions fear that trespassing the government’s permitted visa refusal limit could impose restrictions on recruiting international students.

Why are UK universities withdrawing student admissions?

The UK government has hardened rules governing international student recruitment as part of its bid to prevent misuse of the student visa system. Under the fresh framework, universities risk losing their sponsorship licences if more than 5 per cent of their prospective international students have visa applications rejected, down from the earlier threshold of 10 per cent.

The stringent rules have imposed stress on universities to scrutinise international applicants more watchfully. Some institutions have reportedly suspended recruitment from Pakistan, while applicants from Nigeria and Bangladesh have also seen enormous withdrawn applications.

Financial Times analysis of Home Office data corroborated this by mentioning that 10.5 per cent of UK study visa applications were withdrawn in the first half of 2026, compared with 2.3 per cent during the same period in 2025.

Meanwhile, Pakistan witnessed the highest withdrawal rate at 40.9 per cent, followed by Bangladesh at 23.5 per cent and Nigeria at 22.7 per cent. Universities say the figures partly reveal that numerous admission offers are being revoked.

Implications for Indian students seeking to study in UK

Given the recent backdrop, Indian students planning to do higher education in the UK could witness greater uncertainty during the admission process. Even students who receive university offers may face more scrutiny as institutions seek to minimise the risk of visa refusals.

To navigate this, applicants should  ensure that their academic records, financial documents, course choices and stated study plans are consistent and well documented. Students should also have regular communication with their universities and check whether their admission offers remain valid.

Despite the recent soaring visa refusals, it do not implies a blanket ban on Indian students. However, universities may adopt more cautious admission policies in future as they respond to the evolving regulatory environment.

Why is the UK tightening student visa rules?

The government says stricter oversight is necessary to protect the integrity of the immigration system and prevent student visas from being used as a route to claim asylum. The Home Office has introduced tougher sponsorship requirements and penalties for institutions that fail to meet recruitment standards.
