1. Mohammad Nissar (1932)
Mohammad Nissar is the first ever Indian bowler to take 5 wicket haul in test matches. He achieved this feat in the first ever test match played by India against England in Lord’s in 1932. He finished with figures of 5/93 in the first innings.
2. V.V. Kumar (1961) — The Forgotten Spinner
Vaman Viswanath Kumar, known as V.V. Kumar, was a leg-break googly bowler who became the second Indian to achieve this unique feat. His debut test was against Pakistan in 1961, he took 5/64 in the first innings. Although he had a short career playing only two test matches.
3. Syed Abid Ali (1967)
Syed Abid Ali was a medium pacer who made his debut for India in an away test match against Australia in 1967. He took Australian batsmen by surprise and claimed 6/55 in the first innings at Adelaide.
4. Dilip Doshi (1979)
Dilip Doshi was a slow left-arm orthodox bowler who became the first left arm spinner to take 5 wickets in his debut test match for India. He took 6/103 against Australia in Chennai in the year 1979.
5. Narendra Hirwani (1988)
Narendra Hirwani bowled his way into the record books when he claimed 16 wickets in his debut test match against the famed West Indies team. His bowling figures of 8/61 in first innings and 8/75 in the second innings is recorded as the best bowling figures in the history of test cricket on debut.
6. Amit Mishra (2008)
Amit Mishra announced himself in a grand fashion when he became the only leg spinner after Narendra Hirwani to take a fifer on his test debut in 2008. He dismantled the Australian batting line up to finish with figures of 5/71 in the first innings at Mohali.
7. Ravichandran Ashwin (2011)
One of the greatest off spinners to play for India was Ravichandran Ashwin, he claimed five wicket haul in the second innings of his debut test match, his figures of 6/47 rattled the West Indies batting line up and handed India a comfortable win.
8. Mohammed Shami (2013)
Mohammed Shami is only the third fast bowler in the history of Indian test cricket to claim a five wicket haul in his Test debut. Playing his first Test against West Indies he finished with 5/47 in the second innings, a spell that turned the tide in favour of India.
9. Axar Patel (2021)
Axar Patel became the second left arm spinner to have taken 5 wickets in his Test debut. His figures of 5/60 against England in the second innings of the match secured India a comfortable victory.
He in fact went on to take 27 wickets in that series, equalling Dilip Doshi’s record of most wickets by an Indian bowler in a debut test series.
10. Manav Suthar (2026)
Manav Suthar spun his way to cricketing glory when he became only the third left-arm orthodox bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in his debut Test. He effectively wiped out Afghanistan in the first innings and finished with 6/33, becoming the 10th Indian bowler to achieve this unique feat.
