There have been major positive shifts in the job market of Punjab in the last couple of years. The overhaul of the recruitment process in a transparent and meritocratic way in the government under CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has been the main reason that the youth have got back their trust and confidence. For a long time, complaints of recommendations and corruption in recruitment processes had weakened young people’s confidence, which the new system has now strongly restored.
In the last three and a half years, more than 1.6 lakh young people in the state have been provided employment in government, private, and contractual sectors. Of these, 58,962 appointments were made purely on the basis of merit. Chief Minister Mann clearly stated, “In Punjab, jobs will now be given based on qualification, not bribery or recommendations.” This message is filling the youth with new energy.
The highest number of appointments have been made in the education, police, health, and power sectors. In the education department, more than 2,000 posts were filled, including 725 special educators and teachers in the master cadre. The police department recruited 1,746 personnel, including 1,261 in district police and 485 in armed police. The health department appointed more than 1,000 doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff.
In the energy sector, PSPCL and PSTCL together recruited 8,984 personnel, leading to a notable improvement in the quality and efficiency of power services. The government claims that this transparent system has reduced the trend of youth migrating abroad and has increased the possibilities of stable careers within the state.
In the words of the Chief Minister, “These are not just numbers, but a shift in mindset—where honesty is valued and talent is given priority.” This initiative also builds confidence among future generations that hard work and ability receive their due respect in Punjab.
