New York City is entering a transformative era of early childhood education as Mayor Zohran Mamdani accelerates the push for universal access to 3-K programs and Pre-K programs.

In a recent high-profile appearance alongside Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Mamdani emphasized that no family should be crushed by the cost of childcare, which can soar as high as $26,000 annually per child. 

As of late February 2026, over 50,000 families have already submitted applications through the official MySchools portal. With the final deadline of February 27, 2026, looming, the administration is utilizing everything from TaxiTV to LinkNYC kiosks to ensure that every eligible New Yorker, regardless of immigration status or primary language, is aware of these free, high-quality educational opportunities.

How to Apply for NYC 3-K and Pre-K Programs?

The Mamdani administration has streamlined the enrollment process to make it as accessible as possible. Applications are not first-come, first-served, meaning every family that applies by the deadline will receive an offer in May. 

Parents can choose from several settings, including NYC Early Education Centers (NYCEECs), district schools, and home-based family childcare providers.

• Online: Visit the official portal at MySchools.nyc (Available in 13 languages).

• Phone: Call 718-935-2009 for assistance in over 200 languages.

• In-Person: Visit one of the 13 Family Welcome Centers located across the five boroughs.

Key Deadlines and Eligibility for 2026-2027

To qualify for the 2026-2027 school year, children must meet specific age requirements based on their birth year. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has also teased the upcoming launch of 2-Care, a program aimed at providing 2,000 free seats for two-year-olds by this fall.

What Documents are Needed for Registration?

You will need to send the school or center certain documents in order to confirm your child's seat once you get an offer in May. The NYC Department of Education says that the following documents are required for eligibility:

• Proof of Age: Birth certificate, passport, or baptismal record.

• Proof of Address: Two forms (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement, or payroll receipt).

• Immunization Records: Latest medical forms from your pediatrician.

• IEP/504 Plans: If applicable, to ensure your child receives necessary support services.
