Worm Moon 2026: Why Does March Full Moon Have an Unusual Name?

March 2026's full moon, called the Worm Moon, has a unique name and connection to this season, but is the same as all other full moons in terms of phase. The name is a frequent source of intrigue, just like a "super" or "blood" moon does not describe how the moon looks. 

The Worm Moon's name comes from the tradition in early North America associating the full moon with the life cycle transformations as winter turns into spring. March brings warmth and melting soil, therefore, we see signs of life returning with the rise of warmer temperatures and thawed soil.

The term "Worm Moon" is an old Native American and colonial-era name for the full moon. The names of the full moons were based on multispecies natural events that occur every month as a seasonal change occurs.

March was the month when the snow started to melt away, and as the earth warmed up, the ground began to thaw out. 

With the thawing of the earth, earthworms began to emerge from the earth as well, and the birds would come to eat the earthworms. So for the month of March, as spring was right around the corner as the earthworms were making their return to the surface of the earth, and their return was visible to many people and birds.

 The full moon in the month of March was referred to as the Worm Moon because of the emergence of the earthworms.

In addition to earthworms being visible during the month of March, there were accounts indicating that beetle larvae would crawl out from under the bark during the month of March when it started to warm up, which is indicative of the end of winter.
