Joe Kent is a veteran of the military as well as a former intelligence officer and national security official. The most recent year that has brought him into the public eye was due to his appointment to head the US National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC).

Joe Kent was born on April 11th, 1980, in Sweet Home, Oregon, USA, and raised in Portland, Oregon. 

At an early age, he realized his desire for working within the concept of Defence & International Security, which led him into higher learning and obtaining a formal education related to the subject. 

Joe completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Norwich University, School of Graduate and Continuing Education in Strategic Defence Analysis, which comprises military strategy, security studies, and defence planning.

Military Experience

Joe Kent began his career in the Army after graduating from Norwich in 1998, where he joined in 1998 by enlisting into the United States Army and completed 11 combat deployments over his 20-year career in the military.

He performing multiple duties within the elite military units including the 75th Ranger Regiment, Army Special Forces and Intelligence Support Activities, to include being (RET) Chief Warrant Officer 2018.

CIA Service and Personal Tragedy

After serving in the Military, Kent served at the CIA's Special Activities Centre, conducting paramilitary operations. 

He was devastated when his wife, Senior Chief Petty Officer Shannon Kent, a Navy Cryptologist, lost her life in 2019 while serving in Syria.

Leading U.S. Counterterrorism: NCTC Director Role

Kent served as the nation's highest-level counterterrorism official after being appointed and subsequently confirmed by the U.S. Senate to be the Director of the NCTC in 2025.

 His role was to coordinate the various agencies’ intelligence, assess and analyze potential threats, and provide the President with recommendations on how to mitigate those threats. 

In addition, he directed the integration of intelligence provided by and from the CIA, FBI, and DoD, along with other agencies to ensure that the U.S. continues to be secure from threats around the world.
