A possible nuclear energy cooperation between the US and Japan could be created as part of an overall investment of about $550 billion in promoting energy cooperation between the two nations. A statement from Westinghouse Electric Company indicates that combining the use of US-manufactured nuclear technologies with Japanese-manufactured products and materials may be feasible.
Both countries have recently put greater focus on nuclear energy as a viable, cleaner source of electricity generation, and the potential partnership represents an early indication of both nations working towards a significant international nuclear energy partnership despite location or investment decisions still being determined.

Agreement on Roles in the Project
Westinghouse executive members have stated that both the U.S. Government and Japanese Government have defined the roles each will play within this potential project.
The proposed cooperative arrangement between the American Nuclear Company and multiple Japanese nuclear power generation equipment manufacturers is expected to result in an agreement by both parties regarding supply chain operations throughout Japan to support the potential construction and implementation phases of the project (however, final investment decisions on the Project and precise locations of the Project have not yet been established).
Part of a Larger $550 Billion Investment Plan
The Nuclear Initiative will likely be included as a second phase in the Japan $550 Billion Investment Package, which is intended to develop Energy Security and Industry Cooperation between the two countries.
The Nuclear Initiative could involve leading-edge Nuclear Technologies such as Pressurized Water Reactors, PWR's or Small Modular Reacto(s (SMR's) which are both being researched by the Westinghouse Companies and its business partners. It will be possible that investments in the development of the Reactors and associated infrastructure may be approximately $100 Billion for particular phases of this Agreement.
