An unprecedented early-season heat wave is now occurring in Southern California, and it has already surpassed record high temperatures throughout the region.

The inland valleys and cities are experiencing extreme high temperatures far exceeding historical averages (average high of nearly 100ºF) for mid-March.

Forecasters expect these extreme temperature records will continue to be established over the next few days; therefore, the extreme heat event has just begun.

The combination of prolonged periods of extremely strong high-pressure systems combined with extremely dry conditions has created extreme temperatures experienced by the general population and will create unsafe living conditions for high-risk populations.

Public safety officials are recommending remaining hydrated, reducing outdoor activities, and using caution until this extreme heat event passes.

Record‑Breaking Temperatures Already Logged

This Monday, parts of Los Angeles had higher than average temperatures for mid-March.

The temperature at the Hollywood Burbank Airport reached 92°F, one degree higher than the previous day’s record set in 2004, while in Woodland Hills it reached 97°F, exceeding its previous record of 2007.

According to state meteorologists, this is just the beginning of the record‐breaking temperatures that will occur across the entire southern California region and into southern Arizona during the coming days.

Unseasonably High Forecasts Through the Week

Temperatures are expected to be between 20-35 degrees above average nationwide.

The mid to late afternoon highs around the region are likely to be in the mid 90's to low 100's, with some parts particularly the inland areas possibly experiencing temperatures well into the triple digits.

Coastal areas are going to see sharply increased highs as well normally under plenty of Pacific Ocean influence, forecasters predict upper 80's and lower 90's for later this week along most California coast.

Warnings and Advisories in Effect

The National Weather Service has issued the following advisories and additional warnings for both inland and coastal areas during the week:

Extreme heat warnings will remain in effect for inland and/or valley areas only through the end of this week.

Heat advisories will be in effect for several areas near or adjacent to the coastline and/or at lower elevation across California for the duration of this week.

Officials are establishing regulations for residents of the state particularly young children, seniors, outdoor workers, and those without adequate means of cooling to plan ahead and take necessary cautionary measures.

Heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke are now far more likely to occur than they were when temperatures climbed this rapidly last year.
