Kirk Moore, the Principal at Pauls Valley High School, bravely disarmed and restrained the shooter who was about to carry out a school shooting massacre at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, on Friday, April 6, 2026, at midday in the school's lobby.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) identified the shooter as 20 year-old Victor Hawkins, who is a former student of the Pauls Valley High School.

Principal Moore, who suffered a gunshot injury in his leg after the gun that Hawkins carried malfunctioned during the exchange.

Moore then held the arm carrying the weapon while another employee kicked it away from him, thereby saving other students from becoming the target of the shooter's deadly intentions.

Pauls Valley High School Shooting Heroics

Despite Pauls Valley High School’s normal security measures such as visitor screening, the shooter identified as Hawkins, a recently graduated student, managed to gain entry unobserved, raising issues about the access routes into the school.

However, it was evident that the staff reacted well when another staff member aided Moore to ensure that the area was secure before the arrival of the police just minutes later.

The investigators discovered that Hawkins had a gun and that he appeared to have had an aim of targeting the students.

Motives are still unclear as psychological testing is still ongoing. It also led to immediate counseling sessions for both the students and teachers.

Why are School Shooting Cases Rising in America?

The U.S. is witnessing an alarming spike in school shootings, with at least five K-12 shootings resulting in deaths or injuries reported in 2026 alone.

The issue stems from several issues such as easy access to weapons—handguns account for 84% of the incidents—as well as lax security at schools and mental health problems faced by young people on social media sites.

Though Oklahoma falls in the middle category with a total of 31 historical shootings, places like Texas (237) demonstrate a regional trend linked to gun policies and population density.

Professionals recommend adopting a public health approach, such as risk assessment, technology barriers, and expansion of counseling to reduce shootings that have increased 12 times in decades.
