Hundreds of passengers experienced chaos at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on March 23, 2026. There were 168 delayed flights and 10 canceled flights, mainly for United Airlines, Delta, and American Airlines. 

The passengers experienced hours-long tarmac waits without being aware of their estimated times of arrival due to winter storms and staff shortages for air traffic control. 

There were no reported injuries; however, passengers expressed their frustration through social media.

United Airlines took the biggest hit with 92 delays and 6 cancellations, followed by Delta (45 delays, 3 cancellations) and American (31 delays, 1 cancel). 

Passengers suffered from 3+ hour tarmac waits without food on United flights; families with kids expressed ire at the gate. 

The Port Authority cited bad weather and chronic understaffing of ATC, with Newark seeing an average of 1,300 flights daily.

Causes Behind Newark Airport Flight Disruptions

Winter squalls delivered 4 inches of snow, which caused icy runways and a de-icing backlog. FAA Newark tower operates at 85% staffing. Ground stop took 90 minutes. 

United cited crew timeouts. Delta rerouted 20% of flights to JFK, EWR alternatives. Travelers learned of the ground stop via FlightAware apps, which showed a 78% on-time rate compared to the national average of 92%.

Passenger Impact and Recovery Efforts

Stranded passengers slept at terminals, and American Airlines offered $200 vouchers, as well as United Airlines hotel deals for overnight stays. 

Rebooking passengers jammed counters, and some went home. The Port Authority added personnel, and the FAA promised hiring more controllers. 

TripIt, ExpertFlyer, etc., tracked flight changes, and X filled up with rants on #EWRDelays. International flights to Europe, India, etc., experienced ripple delays.
