Pole Position: Russell Leads Mercedes 1-2
Russell produced a strong run in the final part of qualifying (Q3) to take the pole position ahead of Kimi Antonelli , who finished around three-tenths behind, effectively providing Mercedes with the top two positions on the grid for Sunday’s race.
With both cars starting at the front of the grid, this indicates to everyone involved that Mercedes will be one of the stronger performing teams in the early stages of the 2026 season.
By finishing second, Kimi immediately recovered after an earlier practice crash to start his rookie season on the front row for the first race of the new year.

Verstappen Crash Shocks Qualifying
One of the biggest news stories from the session was when Max Verstappen crashed during Q1. The Red Bull driver lost control after locking up his rear axle and went into the barriers at Turn 1, ending his session before he even had a chance to set a lap time.
The crash brought out a red flag and means that he will start from the back of the grid for the race.
