The American Revolution did not result from the work of one leader or one event but through a lengthy process that involved ideas, protests, and organized resistance to British imperial domination. In the 18th century, there developed a great deal of discontent across the American colonies regarding things like heavy taxation, lack of representation in the British parliament and imperial domination, which led to widespread unrest.

Although military leaders became visible early during the war, the success of the revolution in its infancy was based on political mobilization, public persuasion, and unified action.

One individual was able to establish himself as a leader in generating revolutionary ideas for the colonies and developing a united front in opposition to British authority through his ability to sway public opinion against the British before the colonists had declared themselves independent, he is recognized as one of the principal founders of the American revolutionary movement.

Many people refer to Samuel Adams as the father of the American Revolution. Samuel Adams was a political leader and activist from Massachusetts who played an essential role in getting Americans to resist British rule and policies. 

Samuel Adams was instrumental in organizing the American Colonies to oppose British Rule; he encouraged protest and actively supported others in their participation in the Boston Tea Party; and he worked to unite all the colonies to oppose British Rule. Samuel Adams laid the ideological and organizational groundwork for the American Revolution.

Early Leader of Colonial Resistance

In the years leading up to the American Revolution, Samuel Adams was one of the loudest opponents of British colonial policy. 

He was an outspoken critic of the lack of representation and the unfair taxation of the colonies, and through numerous speeches and writings he helped to shape public opinion against British control before the official beginning of the American Revolution.

Organizer of the Sons of Liberty

Samuel Adams was one of the founding members of the Sons of Liberty, a secret organization of American colonists formed to resist British authority.

Using protests, demonstrations, and coordinated actions, the Sons of Liberty helped mobilize colonists and turn their political dissatisfaction into an active resistance to British control.

Leader of the Boston Tea Party

Samuel Adams was heavily involved in the events that led up to the Boston Tea Party in December of 1773. By opposing the Tea Act and urging the colonists to protest collectively against the Act, Samuel Adams was a major contributor in turning the colonists’ anger over the Act into a unified action that challenged British authority and increased revolutionary fervor among the colonists.

Creator of Committees of Correspondence

To help improve communication between the colonies, Samuel Adams was instrumental in the formation of the Committees of Correspondence. 

These committees shared information about British activities and actions; encouraged the colonists to unite as one; coordinated colonists' responses to the British; and generally served as the organizational structure for the colonial resistance movement on a larger scale.
