West Bengal School Holiday: The government of West Bengal, in a major reform within the domain of administration, has announced the official amendment of its holiday calendar in regard to the upcoming festival of Id-Ud-Zoha (Bakrid). The new amendment in this regard has been made through a fresh notice released by the finance department of the state and has included May 28, 2026 (Thursday) as the only day for the holiday.

Because of this change in alignment, all departments within the state government, schools and other educational institutes, as well as public sector enterprises, will remain fully operational on both 26th and 27th May (Tuesday and Wednesday) in 2026. Due to this unforeseen change, all the festive holidays in the state will align themselves with the lunar calendar, thus eliminating any unnecessary interruptions to the process of work. As per bureaucratic authorities, the reassignment of these two days as working days would mean that academic productivity can occur in its best form without creating any backlogs. While there is no break in the middle of the week under this new system, it ensures uninterrupted continuity of work processes.

The Reason Behind the Revision

This is what came across from the formal communication from the authorities that there would be partial modifications done on the mid-week holiday timetable, considering the reality in terms of the actual dates of the lunar calendar.

  • Although the former government had already designated May 26 & 27 as days in the festival calendar, it has now come to light that Bakrid will occur on May 28, 2026.

  • By declaring Thursday as the sole holiday, the local government has been able to harmonize its festival schedule with the national schedule.
