Himalayas see glacier decline

Government data confirms continuing glacier retreat. The Ministry of Earth Sciences has reported an average retreat rate for Hindu Kush Himalayan glaciers, with massive variations across the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra basins.
What is ‘Peak Water’?
One of the pressing concerns is the possibility of Himalayan river basins reaching “peak water”. This means when glacier meltwater crosses its maximum contribution to river flows before declining as the volume of stored ice reduces.
Numerous Himalayan river basins could reach this phase around the middle of this century. Under present trajectories, the Hindu Kush Himalaya could lose up to 80% of its current glacier strength by 2100, thus producing long-term uncertainty over water availability.

What India needs to do?
The report urges for preventive steps including cleaner brick-making technologies, strengthened glacier monitoring, enhanced early-warning systems and better coordination across the Himalayan region.
India has also implemented institutional mechanisms to monitor glaciers, including a Steering Committee on Monitoring of Glaciers and the Centre for Cryosphere and Climate Change Studies at the National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee.
The main hurdle is therefore not restricted to preventing glacier melt. It also involves preparing agriculture, cities, infrastructure and water systems for a situation in which Himalayan water flows become variable.
