Which countries are making their FIFA World Cup debut in 2026?

The four nations that will be making their FIFA World Cup debut are Cabo Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan. Let us look at the countries and know which federation they belong to.

1. Uzbekistan (AFC)

Uzbekistan secured their place by finishing as runners-up in Group A during the third round of Asian qualification. The team has spent years coming close to qualification. Their structured defensive play finally earned them a spot in Group K alongside Portugal and Colombia.

2. Jordan (AFC)

Jordan announced their rise in Asian football by finishing as runners-up in Group B of the third qualifying round. This achievement follows their impressive run to the regular AFC Asian Cup final recently. Jordan will play in Group J, where they will face Argentina, Algeria, and Austria.

3. Cabo Verde (CAF)

Cabo Verde topped Group D in the African qualification pathway to book their ticket. The island nation has consistently improved its football infrastructure over the last decade. They face a challenging tournament start in Group H against Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay.

4. Curaçao (CONCACAF)

Curaçao is the smallest sovereign island nation to have ever qualified for the FIFA World Cup. It belongs to the CONCACAF (The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football), which is one the six continental governing bodies of FIFA.

Curaçao is placed in Group E where they are pitted against former World Champions Germany, and other qualifiers Ivory Coast, and Ecuador.

How Did the 48-Team Expansion Help New Teams?

The relaxation in the rules by Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was the reason behind the inclusion of 48 countries in the FIFA World Cup 2026, breaking the pattern of 32 countries followed in the previous tournament.

This change added 16 extra spots to the global tournament. Regional football confederations received more direct qualifying slots to feature in the world cup.

For example, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) saw its direct slots increase from four to eight. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) slots increased from five to nine. This structural shift allowed rising football nations to qualify without being blocked by traditional continental giants.
